Benefits of Stub Ends

Angular Alignment

One of the key benefits of using stub ends in lap joint flanges is the ability to achieve angular alignment between pipes. Unlike other types of flange connections that require precise alignment during assembly, lap joint flanges allow for slight misalignment between pipes. The stub end provides a rotational interface, allowing the flange to swivel around the pipe axis, thus accommodating minor alignment issues without compromising the integrity of the connection.

Easy Maintenance

Another advantage of using stub ends in lap joint flanges is the ease of maintenance. Since the flange is not welded directly to the pipe, it can be easily removed for inspection, cleaning, or replacement without requiring extensive cutting or welding operations. This simplifies maintenance procedures and reduces downtime, resulting in cost savings for plant operators.

Impact on Connection Performance

The use of stub ends in lap joint flange connections has a significant impact on the performance and reliability of piping systems. By allowing for angular alignment, flexibility, and easy maintenance, stub ends help ensure leak-free connections and prolong the service life of the system. Additionally, the ability to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction reduces the risk of fatigue failure, enhancing the overall safety of the installation.

Flexibility

Lap joint flange connections with stub ends offer greater flexibility compared to other types of flange connections. The ability of the flange to rotate around the stub end allows for thermal expansion and contraction of the piping system without inducing stress or strain on the connection. This flexibility is especially crucial in systems where temperature variations are common, as it helps prevent premature failure due to thermal cycling.

Application of Stub Ends

01/

Oil and gas industry

Oil and gas industries use the stub end flanges in refineries, offshore platforms, pipeline connection, petrochemical plants and more.

02/

Water and wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants require frequent cleaning and maintenance which is possible with installing stub end flanges.

03/

Chemical processing

Chemical industries have to deal with corrosive fluids and a high pressure environment. Hence, stub end flanges are applicable to keep away mating flange from contact with corrosive fluids

04/

Pharmaceutical industries

Stub end provides reliable sealing which helps in minimizing the risk of contamination in preparation of pharmaceutical products.

05/

Food and beverages

Some pipelines require frequent cleaning and disassembly to maintain hygiene in the piping system like in the food and beverage industry.

06/

Shipbuilding

Marine piping systems require reliable connection to deal with corrosive environments fitted with stub end flanges. For direct contact with salt water, high grade pipes are used to avoid corrosion. To connect these pipes, stub end and mating flanges are used to save the cost.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between Type A and Type B stub ends?

A: Type A stub ends are used with lap joint flanges. Type B stub ends are used with slip-on flanges.

Q: What is the difference between long and short stub ends?

A: Long pattern stub ends are also known as ASA Stub Ends. Short pattern stub ends are used with larger flanges in Classes 300 and 600, and with most sizes in Class 900 and higher. When long pattern stub ends are used with flanges in Classes 1500 and 2500, it may be necessary to increase the length A.

Q: Which flange is used with a stub end?

A: A Stub end Flange or more commonly called Lap Joint Flanges are used with Stub Ends. A Stub End adapter slides thru the Flange and is welded to the pipe. The Lap Joint Flange is similar to the Slip On Flange except it is flat across the face and has a radius machined at the bore.

Q: What is a type C stub end?

A: Type C – Type “C” Stub Ends are for use with standard Lap Joint Flanges and Slip on Flanges. The Lap of a Type "C" is flared leaving a rounded edge at the I.D. of the Lap. If required this radius can be made nearly square. The Lap thickness is 75% of the pipe wall.

As one of the leading stub ends manufacturers and suppliers in China, we warmly welcome you to buy high quality stub ends made in China here from our factory. Good service and punctual delivery are available.
